The present study examined the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Persian Sydney Melancholia Prototype Index (SMPI) in Iranian students. This index assesses melancholic depression (Part A) and distinguishes it from non-melancholic types (Part B). In this correlational study, 600 students were selected through convenience sampling nationwide in the 2023-2024 academic year. Construct validity was assessed via exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), reliability through Cronbach’s alpha and test-retest methods, and convergent validity by correlations with the Patient Health Questionnaire (Kroenke et al., 2001) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; 1987). EFA results showed the index’s overall structure was unsatisfactory. Even after removing low-loading items and modeling error covariances, CFA did not confirm the structure. However, a two-factor structure was identified in Part A, which CFA supported. Part A demonstrated good internal consistency (α= 0/75) and test-retest reliability (r=0/72). Its significant correlation with the Patient Health Questionnaire and BDI-II confirmed convergent validity. Structural differences found in this study may result from translation, localization, and cultural variations in the Iranian population. Nevertheless, Part A of the Persian SMPI has favorable psychometric properties, supporting its use in clinical assessments and future research.
